Personally I always thought that Smales was a decent player but there used to be a guy who stood next to us at the Wheldon Road end who absolutely hated him.
If we lost the toss it was Smales''s fault...
I still see him down the lane and think that's the Smales basher. ...
Nowadays I think he's on this forum giving Massey stick.......

I thought he blew hot and cold. But I was referring to the fact that he wore his socks around his ankles mate :-)

Smales, though not great, was solid. Went up in my estimation when he played for us against Dewsbury away in the cup many moons ago. Played left second row, broke his arm in the first half and returned in the second with it strapped to him. He tackled one armed. Didn't do much in attack though!

Played cricket with Smales whilst he was at Fev; hit one of the biggest sixes I've ever seen.
As for the rugby, definitely on a par with Massey.

graham Bradley if that's the right name was pretty ordinary in the centres.

It's a hard one, because there's been some many. But I'd have to say, if you take into count a big reputation and probably a bigger wage I don't think you'd go far wrong with Paul Newlove.

Didn't he later become a Bradford legend?

Together with Mellor the other half of that world beating centre partnership we acquired for our first relegation season who hardly played a match between them!

Graham 'the penguin' Bradley was ordinary with us, went to Bradford and was a world beater.

Actually, in all honesty, those that can remember will recall Bradley moving into the back row. He was an absolute revelation in that position.
Mellor too, in his final season, was a big threat; our most dangerous outside back.
Anyone disagree?
Colin Maskill was an awful signing too. Terrible. Although when David Chapman took to the field he was a good laker, he must be the worst overseas signing in terms of matches he was available / played!?

I agree about Mellor when he played but the fact that him and Newlove missed most of the season was a massive factor in our relegation.
My best memory of him was him having a really good last game. Unfortunately it was too little too late. We lost to Wakey and got relegated!!

Was atrocious in the centre but became a quality second row even with us. Got to Wembley with us. Won grand finals with Bulls.

And don't forget that grubber against Wigin in the 94 Regal Final... one of the best games he had for us.

An outstanding kick, and from memory I'm sure Smales put in the first tackle of the match for us which set the tone.
However, he ultimately was pretty poor for us. £110k wasted.

Just watched nox's youtube upload of 33-2. Smales was awesome from start to finish. Granted he never did much else but still, could well have been MOM the last time we won anything credible.
