You miss my point. At the time we didn’t need Ellis so it has turned into a waste of time and money. Callum McClelland could’ve taken his spot in 2018 and maybe still been with the club.

Hadn't McLelland already decided he wanted to leave in the summer. And Trueman had stole a march on him and Ellis was coming into replace Chase who we had let go earlier in 2017.

So yeah, we did kind of need him as a back-up half back when we only had Gale and Roberts, and the relatively unknown Trueman as back-up.

In the time Powell has been here he's always had 4 halves

2014: Sneyd, Dorn, Finn, Ellis
2015: Gale, Roberts, Finn, Holmes
2016: Gale, Roberts, Hampshire, Holmes
2017: Gale, Roberts, Chase, Holmes
2018: Gale, Roberts, Ellis, Trueman (and Aston)
2019: Gale, Trueman, Roberts (now Rankin), Ellis (and Aston)

If a talented 16 year old lad doesn’t think he can oust Jamie Ellis over the next 2/3 years then I’d question his desire to succeed to be honest!

My recollection of 2014 was that Ellis and Seymour were originally expected to be our starting halves with Finn and Sneyd as cover. Who would have thought?

That be your opinion (and you know what they say about those)...and mine is no, we did not need him as back up. Just because Powell has “always” had four halves in his squad doesn’t mean he always will. Point made be yourself that he went with 5 this season and last.

Hardly signed as first choice when he only joined on a trial basis...

Correct. He was in last chance saloon after Hull and came to Cas on a trial basis with a view to getting fit and potentially earning a contract. Left in pre-season and joined Whitehaven where he played for a year or two I think.

Weird thing with Ellis though...I remember reading Robbie Paul's autobiography and he mentioned that when he was at Leigh, Millward was quite besotted with Ellis after he coached him as a youth at Saints. When at Leigh he picked him over Paul despite never actually doing much and Paul having a great pedigree and a lot to offer.
Then when Millward came to us I am pretty sure Ellis was his first signing, he was crushingly average for us (no better than Finn for example) and then DP decided to snap him up after Hudds blew him out!
Not sure what pro coaches are seeing that I am not but I have never really seen him bring much to the side in both stints!

He equalled or broke the goal kicking record against Huddersfield in his first game.
